Since 1987 — when we had our first child — I’ve been working from home. Yes, I’ve been a mom and a homemaker, but I’ve also run a home business, so that’s home work on top of home work. With a business degree from college, the entrepreneurial spirit is deep in my soul and being home allowed me to delve in without the negative impact being gone most of the day would have.

When my kids were young, I would simply work when they slept. Naptime and a child’s relatively early bedtime gave me ample time to work and learn new skills. But as the kids got older, they slept less and didn’t necessarily require less attention — just different kinds of attention.

We homeschool. Yes, you can read that as my kids are home the seven hours each day, 180 days per year most kids are not at home. So I’m rarely ever alone. If you’re working from home — homeschooling or not — you might be tempted to rent some Calgary apartments to set up shop in another country so you can get some needed alone time. Instead, I found it best to incorporate my kids right into my business life.

My office and the “homeschool room” are one big room, by design. When we built the house, I wanted it that way. I get the kids working on their school projects at a table on one wall and then I work on my business projects at my desk on the opposite wall. If they need help or direction (or want to talk or read or play a game), I attend to it.

Multi-tasking is kind of a myth. There is lost time switching gears. But actually being here with my kids, paying attention to them, helping them, teaching them is well worth that bit of lost work productivity. They learn a lot by seeing what I do and learning how to make a living. I learn a lot about them and know what they are doing. They learn skills of independence and get a fabulous education with lots of time to delve into their own interests. Win win.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend teased me on an email list, saying she had better ways to spend her hours than “wasting them blogging.” Now the truth is, she has no idea how much time I spend online, but I responded:

I guess it depends on how much money you make doing it.

The response was utterly flippant, but the result was a swarm of emails — 131 so far, to be exact — asking how I make money blogging.

I was shocked. Not because lots of people wanted to know how to make money online from home, but because they didn’t know how. The info is everywhere, and I was shocked that so many are interested, but unaware of the opportunities. Because of this need, I decided to hold a local workshop that would teach the attendees how to make money with a blog.

Having coded sites for 18 years and blogged for eight — and having made my share of mistakes along the way — I have accumulated a lot of knowledge. But putting it in to an accessible and understandable form is is still daunting. In order to succeed, these folks need search engine marketing experts on their side, or at least search engine marketing expertise. They need to understand social media optimization — something that didn’t even exist back when I started blogging.

In other words, I’ve got to figure out how to condense 18 years worth of reading, research, study, experience, conversation, mentoring, and trial and error into a neat little package that will actually be useful, without being overwhelming.

New bloggers don’t need to hire a search engine marketing firm, but they need to learn the basics of how to attract readers and get traffic. They say “content is king,” and I agree. But you can have the most fabulous website in the world, with the best possible information, and if no one in your market can find you, the impact is lost. And your blog won’t make you a penny.

If you were just starting out trying to make money with your blog, what one piece of advice would be most helpful?

I’ve long been planning a post on ways to make money using your blog. For the past year, I’ve had more work than I can handle and have had to pass up a number of good opportunities to focus on the best. That post is still under production, but today I learned of a site where bloggers or other internet users can make money by offering their services to others.

Affordable SEO service gigs can add up to a lot of extra cash. Some offerings include article translation, programming, social networking, twitter following, blog reviews, article writing, etc. Completing some of these assignments can add a nice cash flow to your online business.

If you do check out this company, however, please stick to the golden rule. Some of the offers include “blackhat/bulk links” and forum and blog linking. This morning I spent way too much time deleting over 4,600 spam comments from my blog — all from #@$%! people trying to get high-ranking links to their sites. (And I have 10,600 spam comments deal with on my lifestyle design blog. Not happy about that.) 

If I got paid my going rate for all the time I’ve wasted wading through spam emails and spam comments, I’d be a wealthy woman. It’s such a drain on productivity to have to manage the thoughtless, unsavory acts of self-centered, unethical people.

Trust me, anyone who uses the word “weblog” is a spammer, and if the (real) comment below shows up on a post about plugins, you know you’ve been hit:

You can make money online and you can make it ethically — without harming others or causing wasted productivity. Just spend some time thinking about how your actions impact others. Then, dive in and get to work.

The red flags were there, big and bold and waving in front of my face. But I was too stupid to mind them.

The phone rang at 10:20 pm (red flag #1) and the woman on the other end didn’t seem to notice my groggy voice or reticence, but proceeded to ramble on for an hour and a half, explaining (kind of) what should have taken ten to fifteen minutes (red flag #2). The woman admitted to being completely nontechnical and had trouble articulating what she actually wanted done on the site (red flag #3). Within the course of the phone call, she changed her mind back and fourth multiple times about how to proceed (red flag #4).

Most of the conversation — if you can call it that — consisted of her complaining about her awful experiences with the past two people she hired to help with her blog (red flags #5 and #6) and expressed suspicion about another programmer she had spoken with (red flag #7). Another chunk of the conversation was about how she had been wrongly vilified by opponents in a pet cause and about the injustice of being called a “loon” on the #1 ranked site in the SERPS when googling for her name (red flags #8).

My 17-year-old daughter was sitting next to me at her computer through most of the conversation. She heard enough to warn me not to accept the work (red flag #9). My gut told me she was right and as we walked up the stairs I said, “I’m probably going to regret taking on this client.” (Red flag #10.)

But the woman was paying too much for work because she didn’t really know how easily it could be done. She didn’t know what she was doing and so was an easy target for overcharging. And she was referred to me by a relative of a wonderful client. How could I say no? I mean, I’ve never had a problem with a client before. We work together. I work efficiently and err on the side of the client in my billing and try to provide real value. If there are problems, we just discuss resolutions. What could go wrong?

The woman had a bunch of old articles that were just PDF links and wanted them to be added to her new blog to add some depth. Since I work at an hourly rate, I told her to give me just one post to create, I’d report what I did and how long it took, and then she could decide if she wanted to continue. She agreed. She sent me the Word document and I got to work.

I took the Word document and copied the text into the post. I removed the article byline and date to remove the redundancy created by WordPress and set the post date to the article date. I removed some info from the top that referred to the original publication site. Next I set the title as she specified and added the categories that she said she wanted, including those that she wanted this particular post identified with. Then I formatted the headings correctly, got rid of the garbage code, and uploaded and added the image. Last, I manually linked to the new post from a list page a previous (disgruntled) blog worker had set up.

Creating the entire post took 25 minutes, which meant she would be paying me less than half what another programmer was charging for the same work and the same amount per post that she was paying to just have PDF links added. I thought she’d be thrilled!

Instead, I got another midnight phone call (I told her I lived in Utah — I assume she understands the concept of time zones) that left a long, incoherent voice mail. That was followed by a long email repeating most of what she’d said and adding some new accusations.

In a nutshell, she hated everything, it was all terribly wrong, I had completely ignored all her directions, and she wanted it reversed immediately. I was summarily blamed for:

• Doing more than we agreed (“you were just going to input the one thing”) — although I only did input the one post she requested and she would not clarify what else I supposedly did.
• Putting her categories in the incorrect order — even though WordPress alphabetizes categories and only shows those that are actually applied to posts.
• Adding a calendar to her sidebar — because she didn’t understand that her theme is set up to put a calendar in the sidebar for each recent post.
• Doing the “entry items…all wrong” — which I could address if I knew what “entry items” were.
• Having the audacity to remove the ALL CAPS YELLING TEXT and replacing it with real bold and italics as appropriate — because she does not need grammar lessons.
• Removing the byline altogether — because even after exchanging five emails specifically addressing that point and describing to her where it was, she still claimed there was no byline.
• Creating a “snapshot that took three hours” — which meant “took three hours to load,” apparently not realizing that I used the image she directed me to use and that I have no control over her internet speed.
• Putting “an advertisement on the bottom…ads by Google” — even though there are no google ads anywhere on her site and repeated requests could not get her to clarify what she was talking about.

So here’s my great piece of business advice, learned the hard way. When you see those red flags flying and your gut says, “You’ll be sorry if you take on this client,” your gut is probably right. Just run away. Fast.

Affiliate marketing is one of the oldest professions — in internet years. And today it’s still one of the most popular ways of making money online.

Affiliate marketing is a revenue sharing model between web site owners (affiliates) and merchants (who offer a product or service for sale). Affiliates are paid for performance, meaning that they make a small percentage of any sales they refer to the merchants.

Basically, it works like this:

1. Sign up with an affiliate program.
2. If the program offers more than one merchant, choose the merchants you’d like to promote and apply.
3. Get links and banner that are coded with your account.
4. Post the links and banners on your site.
5. Invite visitors to click those links and make purchases.
6. Watch the money add up.

The first affiliate program I joined (and, in fact, the first I ever heard of) was Amazon.com affiliate program in the mid-1990′s. This is an affiliate program set up specifically for Amazon.com and only offers those items found on their site. I am still an Amazon affiliate and it’s one of my favorite programs because (1) I love books and (2) they have tons of other great products. Since I will only recommend those items I really like, Amazon gives me lots of great choices. I can find almost anything there.

I also have accounts at a number of large affiliate programs that administer affiliate systems for multiple merchants. My favorite is ShareASale. They have a great selection of merchants you can promote and their interface is straightforward and very flexible. It’s easy to create any link I want and the reports are easy to create and understand.

In fact, sometimes you get special links that offer great discounts and offers, so your readers can get real value if you watch the specials and only promote quality products and services.
