Over a year ago, I wrote about cheap search engine optimization and some easy ways to start on the path to getting ranked for some long-tail keywords. Those are my favorite, tried and true, classic methods for on-page SEO. But maybe you’re ready to move beyond your own site to bring in the traffic. If so, here’s how social media works with regard to search engine optimization.

1. You create a fabulous post with quality content
2. You share the post on various social sites
3. Other people recognize your amazing content and share with others
4. Repeat steps 2–4

Remember the old shampoo commercial showing the exponential growth of on person sharing the fabulosity of her hair care products with two people who share it with two peeople, and so on and so on and so on? OK, so I’m ancient and this was way before your time. Here you go:

Favorite Social Media Sites

The great thing is, you can tap into these social service as well. With no out-of-pocket cost, you can expose your blog or business to thousands (or even millions) of other people. Here are the services I find easiest to use when combining search engine optimization and social media:

Facebook

Once upon a time, Facebook was just for college kids. Sometimes my three college kids still think it should be, especially when I stalk them. But they got used to me being around and now post on my wall regularly.

Other than annoying your teen and adult children, Facebook is a great way to connect with customers and readers. New posts can be linked to and will show up in the feed of all subscribed. Contest notification can be spread from one reader to another and new readers attracted.

Watch what other businesses do and see which will work for your company.

LinkedIn

LinkIn is another way to connect, but it’s much more buttoned up and business like. If you’re looking for serious business contact, this is the place to be. You can form groups based on employment, education, interest, and find new clients, customers, or even employers.

Twitter

I’ll say it right here: I don’t really get Twitter. I’ve been on for a couple of years, have over 2,000 followers, and do have my new posts auto-tweeted there, but the point rather escapes me. Everyone throwing about one-liners, jabs, rants, and meaningless status updates. People hashtagging fabricated subject matter.

So, I use it, but I’m of no use. Others use it to great business advantage, so check out a positive resource for more info.

YouTube

What an interesting phenomenon. People can waste away every waking hour of the day watching other people do really dumb stuff. And they can create their own stardom from within the comfort of their bedrooms.

Having the most talented kids on planet earth, I’ve posted a few of their performances and my daughter answered her proposed prom date through a posted video in high school. But what about business or serious attempts to make money online?

Some of the best videos are not only shared with millions, but build name recognition and trust. I’ve been a long time Vitamix user, but when it dies, I swear I’ve been converted to K-Tech by their “Will It Blend” series of videos. I mean, if you can blend an iPad, it can probably handle my morning smoothie. (Yup, they convinced me!)

Google+

Google is trying to take over the world. I’m not sure I love that, but as long as they have the best search and one of the most innovative companies in the world, they need to have a bit of your attention.

Google+ is the company’s challenge to Facebook. I have an account and a few friends (or connections or whatever they call them). It’s easy to set up (if you can get past Google’s stupid login jam). If it takes off, be ready to learn all about it and take advantage of the service.

Social Advantage

Having a presence on various social media sites is a great way to get traffic, build credibility, and gain exposure. Find the services that best suit your needs and make the most of those new contacts.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend teased me on an email list, saying she had better ways to spend her hours than “wasting them blogging.” Now the truth is, she has no idea how much time I spend online, but I responded:

I guess it depends on how much money you make doing it.

The response was utterly flippant, but the result was a swarm of emails — 131 so far, to be exact — asking how I make money blogging.

I was shocked. Not because lots of people wanted to know how to make money online from home, but because they didn’t know how. The info is everywhere, and I was shocked that so many are interested, but unaware of the opportunities. Because of this need, I decided to hold a local workshop that would teach the attendees how to make money with a blog.

Having coded sites for 18 years and blogged for eight — and having made my share of mistakes along the way — I have accumulated a lot of knowledge. But putting it in to an accessible and understandable form is is still daunting. In order to succeed, these folks need search engine marketing experts on their side, or at least search engine marketing expertise. They need to understand social media optimization — something that didn’t even exist back when I started blogging.

In other words, I’ve got to figure out how to condense 18 years worth of reading, research, study, experience, conversation, mentoring, and trial and error into a neat little package that will actually be useful, without being overwhelming.

New bloggers don’t need to hire a search engine marketing firm, but they need to learn the basics of how to attract readers and get traffic. They say “content is king,” and I agree. But you can have the most fabulous website in the world, with the best possible information, and if no one in your market can find you, the impact is lost. And your blog won’t make you a penny.

If you were just starting out trying to make money with your blog, what one piece of advice would be most helpful?

In the early 90s I started a home-based educational products company targeted at homeschoolers. It was called Bright Spark Press. In 1994 I created my first website, which was an online catalog for the company. No bells or whistles. No CSS. Just very plain, table-based design.

Given that I was bootstrapping the company, I couldn’t afford to plaster direct mail advertisements all over the country. Even with a site, the infant internet wasn’t a place you could just google for the best results. You found sites mostly by having someone give you the direct URL.

I used AOL message boards and chats as a lead generator and sent people to my fledgling web site. Once I had leads, I used a local web press to print the catalog, printed labels and attached them to each catalog, hand sorted, and used bulk mail for shipments.

Having done things the “old way” (read that: the hard way), having a viable digital medium for advertising opens up a world of possibilities, especially for companies that don’t have an advertising budget to speak of.

And it is not just in the United States. Paid search in the Middle East, for example, is skyrocketing. Marketing opportunities for businesses are available worldwide.

If you’re looking at a business to reach your goals, take the time to learn all you can about digital marketing. It’s an effective and affordable way to reach your customers.

If you have expertise in a topic of interest to others and you can write and communicate reasonably well, the biggest hurdle is getting people to see what you have to offer. Promoting your website is the most difficult thing for most bloggers I work with.

Mixed media marketing — using many different venues, both old tech and new tech (or not tech at all!) — to reach your target audience makes sense. For example, consider these:

• Graphic design
• PPC and CPM
• Television
• Writing campaigns

There are so many ways to get the attention you need. Using some ingenuity, you can find effective — and inexpensive! — ways to reach new readers.

Many of these you can tackle yourself. At some point you may want to look to an advertising agency with mixed media expertise to take over these duties in a more professional way. For most of us, that’s a very long way off. But in the mean time, think like a marketing specialist to get your blog off the ground.

Check out successful marketing firms to see what they do. That! Company (yes, that’s a real company name) uses internet techniques like SEO and PPC. They also use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn for social media connections. Even with all the digital marketing, they still use print, TV, and radio. A mix of both can be the best way to reach your market.

When trying to innovate on a small scale, often it’s helpful to look to larger models. Take the expertise of others and modify it to fit your circumstance and build a better blog.

My first web site — one that I hand coded in 1994 on a bit of American Online server space — was a catalog for my homeschool mail order curriculum business. A couple of years later, we bought our first domain.

Who knew that world of virtual real estate would one day be a hot commodity? So hot, in fact, that getting notices in the seas of cyberspace gets harder every single day. Some people saw the potential, but certainly not most of us.

Now, almost every month a client comes to me in frustration, having thought the old movie adage “if you build it they will come,” applied equally to web sites and blogs. They build their sites, tweek them until they shine, and write their heads off. They don’t even use free SEO software to analyze their sites. They just write and wait. And wait. And wait. And no one comments and no one reads. Except maybe mom.

Content is still king in my book. But even great content can’t be appreciated unless it’s found by the right audience. And there’s the rub. Ranking in search engines and being found is tough these days, and it’s only going to get harder as more sites appear.

I’ve written about how you can take on search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) challenges on your own. It’s definitely doable. But if you want to spend your time writing great content, consider looking for a reputable SEO company to take over the marketing side.

Just as you might have outsourced your accounting or shipping or the technical backend work (like I do), you can outsource your blog optimization and marketing or PPC management to someone with real expertise.

In doing so, look for a fair price and a proven track record. All SEO companies are not created equal.
